A call for “nature highways”
As Britain warms, so the”climate zones” of particular species — where the temperature, rainfall and humidity suit their demands — are very likely to change northwards, says The Guardian. This raises a troubling potential: when creatures can’t proceed with their zones, they can become trapped in suboptimal habitats. Now, the charity Rewilding Britain has proposed a solution: a network of”character highways” be established throughout the nation, to enable animals to migrate with ease. In its own report, the research claims that the climate zones of some critters are moving as much as three mph — and warns that several species, including the red squirrel, are falling or over the edge of extinction due to habitat degradation and lack of connection between habitats. It calls for green bridges to be constructed over major roads, and for farmers to be supplied financial incentives to maintain”natural corridors” across their territory.
